Some Quick-Prep Tips…

According to EarthquakeAuthority.com there’s a 75% probability of one or more magnitude 7.0 earthquakes striking Souther California in a 30-year period, beginning in 2014.

Sheltering at Home Kit (assume 3 days without water or power)

Earthquake Go-Bag (in case you can’t stay sheltered at home)

  • 3 day water supply for each person in household (1 gallon per person, per day)
  • 3 days non-perishable food + can opener
  • First aid kits in home & each car
  • 3 days supply of food and water for pets
  • Flashlights in every room w/extra batteries
  • Power packed for phones OR solar charger
  • Prescription medications
  • Feminine hyginene
  • Whistle
  • Swiss Army-type knife (multi-function)
  • Copies of your personal documents in waterproof container
  • Extra pair of glasses
  • Cash (small bills are best)
  • The bag itself (or a bin on wheels)
  • Important documents
  • Location and contact info
  • Money (cash!) and keys
  • Food and water for at least 3 days
  • Essential devices: flashlight, radio and batteries
  • Travel sizes of essential personal grooming and hygiene items
  • Medical supplies and info
  • N95 masks
  • Physical protection
  • Other supplies unique to your household
  • Your communication and evacuation plan

First Aid Kit Prep (for home and car)

  • 2 pairs sterile gloves
  • Sterile dressing to stop bleeding
  • Soap and antibiotic towelettes to disinfect
  • Antibiotic ointment to prevent infection
  • Burn ointment to prevent infection
  • Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes
  • Eye wash solution to flush eyes
  • Thermometer
  • Prescription medications you take every day (periodically rotate medicines to account for expiration dates)
  • Prescribed medical supplies such as glucose, blood pressure monitors, etc
  • Medicine dropper
  • First Aid book and/or phone app
  • Non-prescription drugs (aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever, anti-diarrhea medication, antacid, laxative)

Food Kit (for sheltering at home)

  • Manual can opener
  • Paper cups (ideally compostable)
  • Paper plates (ideally compostable)
  • Eating utensils (ideally compostable)
  • Ready-to-Eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables
  • Protein or fruit bars
  • Dry cereal or granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Dried Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Crackers
  • Canned juices
  • Non-perishable pasteurized milk
  • High-energy foods
  • Food for infants
  • Comfort/stress foods
